Mark Cuban says AI risks making US healthcare worse by fueling an arms race with insurers

In a recent statement, entrepreneur Mark Cuban expressed concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) might exacerbate the existing issues in the U.S. healthcare system rather than improve it. While acknowledging that AI has the potential to assist physicians, he cautioned that insurers and healthcare intermediaries could exploit the same technology to complicate and inflate the costs of care for both doctors and patients. Cuban articulated his thoughts on the social media platform X, where he highlighted the detrimental impact of conglomerates on healthcare. "For every future AI tool designed to enhance the quality of care, there will be numerous adversarial AI systems employed by these entities to delay and deny patient care," he remarked. His comments were made in response to venture capitalist Marc Andreessen's claim that AI is outperforming the vast majority of human doctors. The billionaire investor pointed out that the real barrier to healthcare improvement lies in the activities of insurers, pharmacy benefit managers, and other middlemen, who consume a substantial portion of doctors' time. He estimated that as much as 25% of a physician’s time is wasted navigating these bureaucratic hurdles, which ultimately drive up costs for both healthcare providers and patients. Cuban noted that the ongoing conflict in the healthcare sector is evident. He described how conglomerates are already utilizing AI to manipulate contracts and mislead stakeholders, while hospitals hire third-party firms for revenue cycle management that can take up to 10% of their revenue. In 2022, Cuban co-founded the Cost Plus Drug Company, which aims to reduce prescription drug prices by eliminating intermediaries and selling generic medications directly to consumers with clear pricing structures. He likened the competition between AI agents in healthcare to the classic comic strip "Spy vs. Spy," where rival spies are perpetually engaged in a battle of wits. Furthermore, Cuban emphasized the lack of transparency regarding healthcare costs, stating that employers often have no idea what they are actually paying for the care their employees receive. He believes that instead of merely adding AI to the existing framework, businesses should leverage AI to negotiate directly with healthcare providers, effectively bypassing the middlemen. Until these intermediaries are removed from the equation, he argues, AI alone will not rectify the core issues plaguing the healthcare industry.
