Mark Cuban, a parent of 3, says ChatGPT's new age restrictions for erotica could go really wrong

Mark Cuban, an entrepreneur and father of three, has expressed strong concerns regarding OpenAI's decision to permit adult-themed content, specifically erotica, on its ChatGPT platform. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced on social media that this feature is set to launch in December for verified adults, alongside enhanced age restrictions to manage access. Cuban took to social media to voice his skepticism about the effectiveness of these age restrictions. He believes that these measures will not adequately protect children from potentially inappropriate content. "This is going to backfire. Hard. No parent is going to trust that their kids can't get through your age gating," he stated, cautioning that children might easily bypass such barriers. The entrepreneur, known for his role on "Shark Tank," highlighted the risks associated with older teenagers sharing explicit content with younger peers. He questioned the wisdom of introducing such material, referring to the potential dangers of high school seniors exposing 14-year-olds to adult themes. Cuban, who has two daughters and a son, articulated a common parental concern: "Why take the risk?" OpenAI's current terms dictate that users must be at least 13 years old to access their services, with users under 18 required to obtain parental consent. This decision to embrace adult content aligns with a broader industry trend, as competitors like Elon Musk's xAI have also ventured into this territory. xAI recently unveiled AI companions and an image generator capable of producing adult-oriented material. Initially, Altman had been cautious about integrating adult content into OpenAI's offerings, suggesting that it did not align with the company's core values. However, the shift towards mature themes reflects a significant change in direction for the organization, raising questions about the implications for both users and the platform's reputation.
