Entrepreneur and investor Mark Cuban has voiced strong opinions about the need for stricter regulations on advertising within AI models. In a recent post on social media platform X, he urged the White House to take decisive action by making it illegal for AI systems to serve ads. Cuban's remarks were directed towards David Sacks, who holds the position of AI and crypto advisor in the current administration. He emphasized the necessity of examining referral fees associated with AI interactions, warning that algorithms optimized for revenue could negatively impact the integrity of language model outputs. Cuban expressed concerns about the potential for undisclosed brand recommendations within AI interactions, drawing parallels to the challenges posed by algorithms on social media platforms. In a follow-up message, Cuban indicated that he would support advertising in AI models if such ads were clearly labeled and completely separated from user-generated content. His comments come shortly after the Trump administration released its 28-page "AI Action Plan," which aims to streamline AI innovation by removing existing regulatory barriers. Historically, the Trump administration has favored a lighter regulatory touch on AI compared to the Biden administration, which recently mandated greater transparency from AI companies. The new action plan also suggests withholding federal funding from states that impose stringent AI regulations. Cuban's apprehensions may stem from the growing influence of former social media executives within the AI landscape. Notable hires include Sam Altman of OpenAI, who brought in Fidji Simo, a former leader at Instacart and Meta, and other companies are following suit with similar appointments. Cuban has consistently highlighted the potential risks associated with AI technologies, particularly concerning misinformation. In a past interview, he warned that the evolution of AI tools could complicate our understanding of decision-making processes within these systems. He recently noted that companies are likely to safeguard valuable intellectual property to maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI market, underscoring the importance of intellectual property in this new era.
