Mark Cuban says AI can expose where employers are getting 'ripped off' by health insurers

Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur, emphasizes the transformative power of AI for employers seeking to cut healthcare expenses. In a recent episode of the 'Digital Health Heavyweights' podcast, he highlighted that leveraging AI chatbots—particularly large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini—can help dissect complex healthcare contracts to pinpoint areas where companies may be overpaying. Cuban advised employers to utilize these AI tools by running their healthcare contracts through them and asking, 'Where am I getting ripped off?' He explained that these models can simplify the daunting task of navigating lengthy contracts, which often consist of hundreds of pages filled with intricate legal jargon. 'Every single definition, every single word in your contract is being used to take advantage of you,' he warned. As the co-founder of Cost Plus Drugs, a pharmacy aimed at enhancing transparency in prescription pricing, Cuban has been vocal about the ways health insurers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) contribute to inflated healthcare costs through unclear pricing structures and convoluted contracts. His recent statements on social media reiterated his belief that employers frequently lack awareness of the true costs associated with the healthcare services they provide to employees. Cuban further asserted that no company, not even their own, can accurately ascertain the real expenses tied to the care they purchase. He urged employers to reconsider their reliance on traditional insurance models. Instead, he suggested that companies with the financial capability should negotiate directly with healthcare providers—such as hospitals and physician groups—allowing them to secure more favorable pricing and greater oversight of their healthcare expenditures.
