In a recent appearance on the 'All-In' podcast, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff disclosed a revealing new use for the company’s Slack platform: employing AI to monitor employee conversations. This innovative approach allows the organization to gain insights into employees' frustrations, concerns, and operational issues in real-time. Since acquiring Slack in 2021, Salesforce has been harnessing the power of AI to glean valuable intelligence from the platform. Benioff explained, "Because you run your company on Slack, all your DMs, all your channels, we're reading that now through the AI and we can tell you more about your business than you know." The billionaire executive shared how he personally utilizes Slackbot to query information instantly. He can ask it questions like, "What are my top five deals? What are my employees upset about? What are the top three things I need to focus on?" Once queried, the AI provides rapid responses based on available data. Salesforce is not the only tech giant leveraging AI for organizational insights. Microsoft has integrated its Copilot across various applications, such as Teams and Outlook, enabling it to summarize meetings, scan messages, and extract action items. Meanwhile, Google is developing its own AI tools, like Gemini, within Workspace to analyze communications and improve workflow. Emerging startups are also entering this competitive arena. For instance, Glean, a Silicon Valley startup, markets itself as a workplace search engine that consolidates insights from platforms like Slack, Google Drive, and Jira. Benioff's remarks serve as an important reminder for employees to be cautious about their communications on professional messaging platforms. Typically, employers own the data generated within company Slack workspaces and may retain or analyze messages based on their policies. As Slack notes in its privacy guidelines, "a Customer owns and controls all content submitted to their workspace," highlighting the need for discretion in workplace communications.
