Marc Andreessen reportedly told group chat that universities will ‘pay the price’ for DEI

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen has raised eyebrows with his recent comments directed at prestigious universities like Stanford and MIT, as well as the National Science Foundation. These remarks surfaced in a group chat involving AI experts and officials from the Trump administration, as reported by the Washington Post. In the chat, Andreessen expressed his belief that institutions such as MIT and Stanford have devolved into 'political operations' that impede American innovation. He went on to share a personal grievance, stating that Stanford had forced his wife out of her role as chair of the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, a move he predicts could cost the university around $5 billion in future donations. Andreessen's criticisms didn't stop there; he controversially claimed that universities have 'declared war on 70% of the country' and suggested they would face consequences for their actions. He specifically targeted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and immigration policies, labeling both as 'politically lethal' forms of discrimination. Last year, Andreessen and his co-founder Ben Horowitz openly endorsed Donald Trump's presidential campaign, and since then, some of his associates have taken positions within the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Sequoia Capital has refrained from commenting following partner Shaun Maguire's recent disparaging remarks about Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor, calling him an 'Islamist' and criticizing his background. As this situation unfolds, it raises questions about the intersection of politics and academia, and the potential ramifications for institutions caught in the crossfire.
