‘Maps are the hardest?’ MapmyIndia disagrees — and invites Perplexity to team up

MapmyIndia, a prominent player in the Indian digital mapping sector, has extended an invitation to Perplexity AI for collaboration. This outreach comes in response to comments made by Perplexity's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, who recently stated that creating maps is among the most challenging tasks in tech. On October 24, Srinivas expressed on social media that both YouTube and mapping technologies present significant challenges, suggesting they might even be insurmountable. In a post on X, MapmyIndia emphasized its eagerness to partner with Perplexity, mirroring its successful collaboration with Zoho. Founded in 1995, MapmyIndia has dedicated nearly three decades to developing intricate maps of India, boasting a database rich in detail down to the house-number level. This level of precision, according to the firm, is something even international competitors have found difficult to achieve. The company stated, "While many believed that world-class maps could only originate from global giants, @MapmyIndia has quietly made the impossible possible." With a user base exceeding 35 million, MapmyIndia aims to expand its influence on a global scale while enhancing India’s presence in the international digital landscape. "Maps are integral to a nation's digital future," the company noted in its post. The message concluded with a strong patriotic sentiment: "Built in India. For India. For the world by @MapmyIndia, a swadeshi company." The invitation for collaboration sparked vibrant discussions online. Users shared varied opinions, with one user, Abhishek Dwivedi, inquiring about updating local area maps, while another questioned the necessity of positioning MapmyIndia as a swadeshi brand in a global marketplace. Conversely, some users, like Kabyik, supported the idea of a partnership between Perplexity and MapmyIndia, highlighting the limitations of Google Maps in certain areas. The conversation around the potential collaboration continues to evolve as both companies explore the possibilities of enhancing mapping technologies together.
