Paid, the AI agent ‘results-based billing’ startup from Manny Medina, raises huge $21M seed

Manny Medina, renowned for founding the sales automation startup Outreach, has captured the attention of investors with his latest venture, Paid. The London-based startup recently completed a successful seed funding round, raising an impressive $21.6 million, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. With an earlier pre-seed round of €10 million raised in March, Paid has amassed a total of $33.3 million in funding before even launching its Series A round. A source familiar with the situation indicates that the company’s valuation now exceeds $100 million. Emerging from stealth mode in March, Paid is making a unique contribution to the world of AI by focusing on 'results-based billing' rather than providing traditional agents. The company aims to empower creators of agent technology to monetize their algorithms based on the tangible value these agents deliver. This approach marks a shift from the conventional subscription models of the SaaS era, which often resulted in unsustainable costs for developers. Medina explains that the current landscape requires agent makers to demonstrate the value their technologies provide, especially since many agents operate in the background and may go unnoticed. The challenge lies in creating a billing infrastructure that accurately reflects the additional work agents perform, as the traditional models of fixed monthly fees or limited credits can be detrimental. Companies are increasingly hesitant to invest in AI solutions that fail to yield significant results, as evidenced by a recent MIT study revealing that 95% of enterprise AI projects did not deliver value. Among its initial clients, Paid has attracted attention from Artisan, a notable sales automation startup, while also securing ERP vendor IFS as a new customer. Alexander Schmitt from Lightspeed highlighted the firm’s substantial investment in AI over the past three years and acknowledged the widespread challenges in attaching value to AI agents. He believes that Paid's innovative approach is a standout in the industry, stating, "It’s something that we haven’t seen someone else build." As the market for agent-based solutions evolves, the potential for increased competition in results-based billing may rise, especially if Paid's model proves successful in integrating agents into business workflows.
