Malaysia may ban users under 16 from social media starting next year

As Australia prepares to enact a ban on social media usage for individuals under 16, Malaysia is following suit with plans to introduce similar regulations next year. Fahmi Fadzil, the country’s communications minister, has indicated that the government is exploring mechanisms to enforce age restrictions across social media platforms. This would prevent users younger than 16 from creating accounts on major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and X. Fadzil expressed hopes that by next year, social media companies will adhere to the government's directive to prohibit users under this age from registering. Malaysia is poised to join a growing list of nations taking significant steps to safeguard children from the potential dangers of social media. Australia is at the forefront of this movement, having passed legislation that will become effective on December 10, requiring social media companies to deactivate accounts belonging to users under 16. Other countries, such as France, Denmark, Italy, and Norway, are also in the process of implementing similar age-restriction measures. In the United States, 24 states have enacted laws mandating age verification for social media users. Utah has led the way, being the first state to require app stores to verify user ages and obtain parental consent for minors downloading applications. Additionally, the U.K. has begun enforcing its Online Safety Act, which took effect in July, mandating stringent age checks for high-risk content and imposing significant fines on platforms that fail to protect children from harmful material. These developments highlight a worldwide trend towards stronger regulations aimed at shielding younger users from the risks associated with social media.
