Data breach at credit check giant 700Credit affects at least 5.6 million

In a significant security incident, 700Credit, a company specializing in credit checks and identity verification for auto dealerships nationwide, has confirmed that a staggering 5.6 million individuals have had their personal information compromised. This breach, which involved sensitive data such as names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers, was attributed to an unknown malicious actor. The Michigan-based firm announced that the breach occurred in October and involved data collected from dealerships between May and October 2025. In response to the incident, 700Credit is reaching out to those affected by sending notification letters via mail, which include offers for credit monitoring services. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has emphasized the importance of taking immediate action if you receive a letter from 700Credit. She advised, "Do not ignore it. It's crucial for anyone impacted by this breach to take proactive measures to safeguard their information. Implementing a credit freeze or utilizing monitoring services can significantly help in preventing identity fraud. I encourage everyone in Michigan to take advantage of the resources available to protect their identities."
