Maine’s governor vetoes data center moratorium

In a recent decision, Maine Governor Janet Mills has exercised her veto power against a proposed bill aimed at halting the approval of new data centers. If enacted, L.D. 307 would have established the nation's first comprehensive statewide moratorium on the construction of data centers, set to last until November 1, 2027. The bill also aimed to form a 13-member council tasked with examining the implications of data center development and providing recommendations. As public unease regarding the environmental impact of data centers grows, other states, including New York, are contemplating similar measures. In her letter to the state legislature, Mills, a Democrat who is currently campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat, expressed that placing a moratorium on new data centers would be justified due to the adverse effects observed in other states, particularly concerning environmental issues and electricity costs. However, she indicated that her support would have been contingent upon including an exemption for a specific project in the Town of Jay, which has garnered considerable local backing. State Representative Melanie Sachs, who sponsored the bill, voiced her concern regarding the veto, stating it could lead to serious repercussions for energy rates, the electric grid, and the environment in the state, ultimately affecting the collective energy future of Maine.
