In a groundbreaking move, the Maharashtra government has officially partnered with Starlink, the satellite internet service founded by Elon Musk. This collaboration, announced on Wednesday, positions Maharashtra as the first state in India to establish a formal agreement with the US-based provider of satellite internet services. The partnership aims to implement Starlink's satellite-based internet solutions across various platforms, including government institutions, rural communities, and essential public infrastructure. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that the service would particularly benefit remote and underserved areas, including districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv. "With Starlink’s advanced satellite technology, Maharashtra is taking a significant step towards closing the digital divide, enhancing education, healthcare, and connectivity throughout the state," CM Fadnavis stated on X. He further noted that this initiative positions Maharashtra as a leader in creating satellite-enabled digital infrastructure in India, marking a significant leap towards a future-ready state. The Maharashtra government clarified that the partnership is contingent upon Starlink obtaining the necessary regulatory and compliance approvals from the Department of Telecom. Recently, Starlink conducted demonstration sessions in Mumbai on October 30 and 31 to showcase its adherence to security and technical regulations for satellite broadband services, with law enforcement agencies present to monitor the proceedings. Starlink plans to set up nine gateway earth stations in major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. The company has applied for a substantial capacity of 600 gigabits per second through its Gen 1 satellite constellation and has chosen Mumbai as its operational hub, securing a 1,294 sq ft office in the Boomerang commercial complex in suburban Chandivali. Moreover, Starlink is actively hiring for various positions in its finance and accounting departments, including roles such as payments manager and accounting manager, all based in Bengaluru. According to a job posting by SpaceX, the company is seeking an accounting manager in India to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements as it expands its global presence with its revolutionary low-latency broadband internet service.
