The Make America Health Again (MAHA) movement is experiencing significant unrest following a surprising endorsement from its founder, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. On Wednesday, Kennedy expressed his support for President Trump’s executive order aimed at ramping up domestic production of glyphosate, a controversial pesticide long opposed by both Kennedy and the movement. Vani Hari, known as “Food Babe” and a close associate of Kennedy, voiced her shock in an interview with The Washington Post. "We truly were hoping that this administration would put people over corporate power," she lamented, emphasizing disappointment in the direction this decision has taken. "But this action moves us away from that commitment." The executive order, which utilizes the Defense Production Act, is intended to increase the domestic supply of glyphosate, the primary component in Bayer's Roundup. Currently, the United States relies heavily on imports from China, as reported by Reuters. The MAHA movement has consistently criticized glyphosate, linking its use to health issues in children. In 2024, while campaigning for the presidency, Kennedy had taken a firm stance against glyphosate, stating that it was a major factor in America's chronic health crisis. He highlighted the herbicide's alarming presence in food, particularly in its application as a desiccant on wheat. Kennedy promised that under his USDA leadership, such practices would be prohibited. Now, after stepping into the role of U.S. health secretary under Trump, Kennedy has shifted his position, claiming that the executive order “puts America first where it matters most—our defense readiness and our food supply,” a statement he shared with CNBC. This change has left many in the MAHA movement questioning the integrity of their leader's commitment to health and safety.
