During a recent visit to India, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for countries to develop their own artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks, steering clear of overwhelming reliance on American or Chinese models. Speaking with students at AIIMS in Delhi, Macron highlighted the shared goal between India and France to harness AI in a manner that promotes sustainability and serves the public good. "The AI summit organized by India is crucial for our collaborative future. Following our previous action summit, we are committed to ensuring that our nations reap the benefits of innovation while also aligning it with the common good of humanity," he stated. Macron pointed out that both India and France, along with Europe, are focused on avoiding dependency on singular models of AI, advocating for a more diversified approach. He emphasized the importance of establishing local data centers and enhancing computing capacities to train talent within both nations. "We possess the necessary resources, and it’s essential that we also prioritize affordable, low-carbon energy to support our ambitions," Macron noted. Further elaborating on the challenges ahead, he remarked that while building capacity is vital, the true measure of success will come from the adoption of AI technologies across various sectors. "Our aim is to ensure that AI is ethically integrated into industries, ultimately boosting productivity, aiding in disease discovery, and transforming energy models," he explained. Macron acknowledged that India and France are taking a unique stance in the AI race, particularly in their choice of smaller language models over larger, more resource-intensive options. "We are proud of our targeted approach, which contrasts with the unsustainable practices of larger technology firms that dominate the market," he added, referencing the environmental concerns linked to massive data center operations. He concluded by expressing optimism about the potential for Indo-French cooperation in bridging the existing gaps in AI development, stating that their partnership is both strategically advantageous and essential for fostering sustainable growth in the AI landscape.
