Mach Industries, a rapidly ascending defense technology startup founded by 22-year-old Ethan Thornton, has successfully secured $300 million in its Series C funding round, elevating its valuation to an impressive $1.8 billion. This figure marks a remarkable fourfold increase from the previous year, showcasing the company's explosive growth since its inception just three years ago. Previously, in June 2025, Mach raised $100 million, which valued the company at $470 million. The latest funding round attracted significant interest from high-profile investors, including Bedrock Capital, Sequoia Capital, and Khosla Ventures. The round was primarily led by Infinite Capital and Ribbit Capital, both known for their investments in deep-tech and fintech sectors. Recognizing the capital-intensive nature of developing autonomous weapons, Thornton began his fundraising efforts a few months ago. He anticipated strong investor demand and was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response. "We initially aimed to raise $200 million, but we were oversubscribed at that amount and decided to increase our target to $300 million, which we are still oversubscribed at," Thornton explained. Since its establishment in 2023, Mach has made notable advancements in defense technology, becoming a focal point of venture capital enthusiasm. Besides artificial intelligence, defense technology has emerged as a hot investment sector, particularly with the operational success of autonomous weapons and drone systems in conflict zones like Ukraine. The Huntington Beach, California-based company is actively developing five autonomous vehicles: Viper, a jet-powered vertical takeoff vehicle; Glide, a high-altitude glider; Stratos, an airborne surveillance system; Dart, a counter-drone interceptor; and Pike, designed for launching long-range munitions. Production on at least three of these innovative systems is slated to commence next year. In a significant achievement, Mach Industries recently secured a contract with the Department of Defense to create a new, undisclosed vehicle for the Navy, described as a "runway-independent strike aircraft." Thornton remarked that this large aircraft could also have potential commercial applications. Mach's workforce has expanded dramatically, growing from around a dozen employees in its first year to approximately 350 today. The company operates from a 115,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Huntington Beach and has plans to establish four new production sites by the end of 2026. Adding to its momentum, Mach acquired solid rocket motor (SRM) startup Exquadrum in a cash-and-equity deal worth $50 million, outbidding several competitors. This strategic acquisition addresses the high demand for SRMs driven by the burgeoning drone market and will allow Mach to produce its own rocket motors while launching a new commercial venture, Mach Energetics. Although Thornton did not disclose specific revenue figures, he noted that the company's sales are evenly divided between government contracts and private sector clients. Reflecting on the company's rapid ascent, he recalled a time when all-hands meetings included only twelve people. Now, such gatherings attract over 200 attendees, highlighting the remarkable growth trajectory of Mach Industries. Thornton expressed pride in the speed of product development, emphasizing the mission of his company and the defense sector to deliver efficient, cost-effective solutions to military and commercial needs, in stark contrast to the lengthy timelines of traditional defense contractors. "Traditionally, developing a jet engine takes about four years, but we’ve achieved significant milestones in just eight months," he said.
