Luma launches AI-powered production studio with faith-focused Wonder Project

Luma, an innovative player in AI video generation, has announced the establishment of Innovative Dreams, a new production company created in partnership with Wonder Project, a streaming platform dedicated to producing faith-based films and television shows for Amazon Prime. The inaugural project from this collaboration, titled "The Old Stories: Moses," will feature British actor Ben Kingsley and is anticipated to premiere this spring on Prime Video. Luma describes Innovative Dreams as a production services company where experienced filmmakers from director Jon Erwin’s team collaborate with Luma’s creative technologists. Together, they aim to help studios and filmmakers bring their most ambitious visions to life. At the core of this partnership is the concept of real-time collaboration, which allows creative teams to work alongside Luma Agents—new tools introduced by the company that streamline the creative process across text, image, video, and audio. According to Luma, this approach represents a substantial advancement over traditional virtual production and performance capture methods, which typically only integrate elements in post-production. "This is the leverage of AI—providing not just speed and cost efficiency, but enhancing the overall quality of production," Luma asserted in a recent social media update. Luma is not alone in this space; other AI startups are also venturing into production. Just last week, Higgsfield launched an original series with a sci-fi episode, while London-based Wonder Studios is collaborating with Campfire Studios on a documentary project. This announcement coincides with remarks from Runway’s co-founder, Cristóbal Valenzuela, who suggested that instead of spending $100 million on a single film, studios could leverage AI to produce multiple films, potentially increasing their odds of hitting a blockbuster. Amit Jain, Luma’s founder and CEO, echoes similar sentiments, arguing that skyrocketing production costs in Hollywood have created significant constraints. He believes that generative AI can facilitate faster, cheaper, and more efficient filmmaking without compromising quality, a philosophy that further cements Luma's partnership with Wonder Project. Wonder Project, which launched in 2023 under the leadership of director Jon Erwin and former Netflix executive Kelly Hoogstraten, aims to cater to the global audience interested in faith and values. Their first endeavor, the Biblical drama series "House of David," is set to debut on Amazon Prime in 2025. It remains to be seen whether Innovative Dreams will limit its focus to religious content or branch out into other genres. In a promotional video for the partnership, Erwin highlighted Innovative Dreams' commitment to a new "real-time hybrid filmmaking" technique, merging performance capture techniques—similar to those used in "Avatar"—and virtual production methods, akin to those seen in "The Mandalorian." This innovative approach allows for live filming at a reduced cost using Luma’s advanced tools. Performance capture involves actors performing in a controlled environment while wearing suits equipped with facial markers, allowing for their movements and expressions to be digitally recorded and transformed into animated characters. Meanwhile, virtual production allows actors to perform in front of massive LED screens, with real-time graphics creating immersive environments that blend the physical and digital realms during the shoot. According to Erwin, Luma’s technology enables the filming of actors in various settings and even allows for the generation of entirely new faces that still accurately reflect the actor's movements and expressions.
