Lucid lays off 1,500 workers in second big cut of the year

Lucid Motors is undergoing significant changes as it seeks to navigate turbulent waters in the electric vehicle market. Just three months after unveiling a new midsize electric vehicle platform aimed at expanding its lineup, the company has announced a staggering layoff of about 1,500 employees, which constitutes 18% of its total workforce. This move marks the second substantial round of layoffs for Lucid this year, following a 12% reduction in February. In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company stated that these workforce cuts are part of a broader strategy to enhance profitability and improve cash flow. Lucid aims to streamline its operations, optimize expenses, and align production with market demand. Additionally, the automaker is discontinuing its second shift at the Casa Grande factory in Arizona. These cost-cutting measures are projected to save Lucid approximately $158 million, although the company will incur $32 million in severance and employee benefits as part of this transition. Among those affected by the layoffs is Marc Winterhoff, the Chief Operating Officer, who had stepped in as acting CEO earlier this year following the unexpected departure of former CEO Peter Rawlinson. In a leadership shakeup, Silvio Napoli was appointed as the new CEO in April, and with Winterhoff's exit, the company will no longer have a COO position.
