Lucid Motors’ former chief engineer sues for wrongful termination and discrimination

Eric Bach, the former chief engineer at Lucid Motors, has initiated a federal lawsuit against the automaker, alleging wrongful termination, discrimination, and retaliation. The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of California on Monday, includes serious accusations, including that a senior HR executive referred to him using a disparaging term related to his German heritage. According to the complaint, Bach's position overseeing the powertrain division was diminished in early 2025, coinciding with an HR investigation into the company’s workplace culture. He claims that the investigation was biased against him due to his background. Bach became aware of the derogatory comment in mid-2025, following the initiation of the investigation and his loss of responsibilities. He encouraged a colleague to report the incident, which he claims Lucid confirmed. The lawsuit also highlights Bach's internal complaint against another vice president for similar racist behavior, alleging that Lucid retaliated by pressuring him to resign in October 2025. He was ultimately terminated on November 5, 2025, although Lucid's press release only stated that he had “departed.” This lawsuit emerges during a challenging period for Lucid Motors, as the company struggles to increase production of its new Gravity SUV while managing financial strain. The automaker has seen a significant turnover in its executive team, with key figures, including the VP of engineering and former CEO Peter Rawlinson, leaving the company under contentious circumstances. Bach, who had been with Lucid for a decade, asserts that he was on a trajectory for advancement within the organization, having been acknowledged by leadership for his dedication and potential future roles, including Chief Technology Officer and possibly Chief Executive Officer. The investigation into workplace culture, which Bach alleges was influenced by racist attitudes from HR, reportedly led to his exclusion from board meetings and a significant loss of influence within the company. As Lucid faces this legal challenge, the outcome may have broader implications for its operational integrity and workplace environment.
