Lucid Bots raises $20M to keep up with demand for its window-washing drones

Lucid Bots, a pioneering startup specializing in window-cleaning robotics, has successfully raised $20 million in a Series B funding round, co-led by Cubit Capital and Idea Fund Partners. This funding boosts the company's total capital to $34 million, enabling it to meet the growing demand for its advanced cleaning drones. Founded and led by CEO Andrew Ashur, Lucid Bots stands out in the robotics industry by focusing on practical applications rather than flashy demonstrations. While many robotics firms are busy developing humanoid robots, Lucid Bots is committed to enhancing safety and efficiency in labor-intensive tasks like window washing. Ashur emphasizes that the company prioritizes performance over hype, stating, "We’ve got dirt under our fingernails, and we’re out on job sites getting work done." Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Lucid Bots manufactures its Sherpa drones and Lavo robots domestically, providing cleaning companies with innovative tools designed to streamline their operations. With an increase in requests for product demonstrations, Ashur humorously noted that the company has outgrown its manufacturing facility's parking lot and needs to scale up its workforce. The journey to this success has not been without challenges. Initially, Lucid Bots faced skepticism from investors, particularly given Ashur's liberal arts background and lack of direct robotics experience. However, his inspiration for the company struck while observing window washers in precarious situations during a windy day at Davidson College, leading him to consider how technology could enhance safety in such environments. Since its inception in 2018, Lucid Bots has transitioned from a cleaning service to a full-fledged robotics company, learning valuable insights that shaped the development of its drones. After a slow start, the company has seen impressive growth, moving from selling its first 100 units over five years to nearing 1,000 units sold. The collected data from their drones continuously informs product improvements, ensuring that Lucid Bots remains competitive. In addition to window cleaning, the company is venturing into adjacent markets, including waterproofing and painting, responding to customer demands. Ashur recently highlighted a successful waterproofing project at a large university stadium, showcasing the versatility of their technology. With a strong pipeline of leads and an expanding product range, Lucid Bots is poised for significant growth in the coming years.
