Louisiana's Governor Jeff Landry is appealing to the Trump administration to preserve the state's broadband funding amidst recent regulatory changes. The Commerce Department has modified the guidelines for the $42 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) grant program, compelling states to adjust their spending strategies for enhancing broadband access. As a result of these changes, there has been a noticeable shift in funding priorities, with states allocating less towards fiber network development and more towards satellite technology. However, this adjustment has not fully met the ambitions of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who has been advocating for increased financial support for his Starlink initiative. With states now redirecting funds, there is growing concern about the potential surplus of the initial $42 billion allocation after broadband network expenditures. Speculation suggests that the Trump administration may intend to redirect any unspent funds back to the U.S. Treasury, leading Governor Landry to voice his concerns about the full utilization of the designated broadband budget. In a letter addressed to Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Landry emphasized the importance of adhering to the original legislative intent of the BEAD program, urging that any remaining allocations be directed towards state-led initiatives that align with national priorities. He highlighted key areas of focus, including Trump's "AI Action Plan" and initiatives aimed at enhancing education and workforce training. Landry commended Lutnick for the swift overhaul of BEAD, noting that it has outpaced the previous administration's efforts, which were hindered by extensive bureaucratic delays and regulatory complications. The governor expressed optimism that Louisiana, along with other states, could leverage the remaining funds to further the administration's strategic goals.
