In a significant legal move, the Attorney General of Louisiana has initiated a lawsuit against the popular online gaming platform Roblox, alleging a grave lack of safety measures that have turned it into a risky environment for children. Filed on Thursday by Attorney General Liz Murrill, the lawsuit claims that Roblox has failed to implement essential safety controls, making it a “perfect place for pedophiles.” The lawsuit accuses Roblox of perpetuating the distribution of child sexual abuse material and enabling the sexual exploitation of minors in Louisiana. With approximately 82 million daily active users, a substantial portion—20%—of whom are under 8 years old, and another 20% aged between 9 and 12, the platform's safety shortcomings are under intense scrutiny. Murrill expressed deep concern, stating, “Due to Roblox’s lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana.” She criticized the platform for prioritizing user growth and profits over the safety of its young users. The lawsuit highlights alarming incidents where adults can masquerade as children, allowing minors to circumvent age restrictions and access inappropriate content. Specific examples cited in the lawsuit include various sexually explicit experiences available on Roblox, such as “Escape to Epstein Island” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.” In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Roblox emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating that they allocate significant resources to detect and prevent inappropriate behavior and content. Roblox has implemented various safety measures, such as restricting direct messaging for users under 13, following concerns about grooming and exposure to explicit content. However, Murrill argues that these actions came too late and are insufficient to protect children adequately. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction that would prevent Roblox from claiming it has adequate safety features and from engaging in practices that violate the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act. As this litigation unfolds, the focus remains on the critical issue of child safety within online platforms.
