
Three former SpaceX engineers have launched a new venture aimed at transforming the optical communications landscape. Travis Brashears, Cameron Ramos, and Serena Grown-Haeberli, co-founders of Mesh Optical Technologies, recently announced a significant $50 million Series A funding round led by Thrive Capital. Mesh Optical Technologies is focused on the mass production of optical transceivers—crucial devices that convert optical signals from fiber or lasers into electronic signals for computational use. The opportunity to innovate in this space arose as the team was developing advanced, compute-intensive satellites for SpaceX, prompting them to evaluate the existing optical transceiver market and its shortcomings. These transceivers play a vital role in data centers that are responsible for training and operating large-scale deep learning models, enabling multiple GPUs to function synergistically. Notably, a prominent U.S. supplier, AOI, recently secured a $4 billion contract for components destined for AWS data centers, underscoring market demand. Brashears emphasizes the scale required for GPU clusters, stating that the number of transceivers needed multiplies significantly with the size of the clusters. Mesh Optical Technologies aims to ramp up production to 1,000 units daily within the year, positioning itself to fulfill bulk orders anticipated for 2027 and 2028. The optical transceiver market is currently dominated by competitors from China, but Mesh is strategically building its supply chain outside of that region. The founders are proactive about potential national security concerns, as highlighted by Thrive Partner Philip Clark, who stresses the importance of ensuring that critical components for AI infrastructures do not originate from countries with conflicting interests. The founders face a significant challenge in implementing automated manufacturing processes that are not widely adopted in the U.S. industry. Much of the necessary expertise resides in China, where even European equipment suppliers are geared toward Chinese clientele. By integrating design and production processes, Mesh aims to deliver more efficient and cost-effective components. Their innovative design eliminates a commonly used, energy-intensive component, which could potentially decrease the power consumption of GPU clusters by 3% to 5%—a crucial improvement as hyperscale operators strive for maximum efficiency. Looking beyond data centers, Mesh envisions a future where optical wavelength communications redefine connectivity. Brashears remarked on the industry's long-standing focus on radio frequencies, expressing the company's ambition to lead the shift toward photonics-based solutions. "We want to interconnect everything, starting with computers and expanding from there," he stated.
