The map of America's data center revolt

Across the United States, a growing movement is emerging against the rapid expansion of data centers, driven in part by the demands of artificial intelligence. Residents are voicing their concerns, prompting numerous local lawmakers to respond with restrictions, moratoriums, or outright bans on new construction projects. Data centers, which serve as the backbone for AI technologies developed by major companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, are at the center of this heated debate. While these facilities are not a new phenomenon, the surge in AI-related demands has led to the construction of significantly larger and more resource-intensive sites. A recent investigation revealed that as of 2025, there are 1,416 data centers either completed or approved across 45 states and Washington, D.C. The federal government, particularly during the Trump administration, has taken steps to expedite the approval process for these data centers, highlighting their potential to generate jobs and bolster the economy. Key projects like the Stargate initiative, a collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, aim to enhance the nation's AI infrastructure to maintain a competitive edge against China. However, many residents in rural areas where these data centers are being constructed are expressing serious concerns about their implications. Issues such as environmental degradation, impacts on wildlife, water resources, air quality, energy costs, traffic congestion, and noise pollution have become focal points for critics. Furthermore, accusations of a lack of transparency in the permitting process have surfaced, sparking community outrage. In response to the growing dissent, public meetings have seen an influx of protesters, petitions are being circulated, and legal challenges are emerging to halt these developments. Despite efforts by prominent figures in the data center industry, including Jeff Bezos and Kevin O'Leary, to sway public sentiment in favor of these projects, a Pew Research Center survey indicates that increasing awareness of data centers has only worsened public perception. The clash between technological advancement and community welfare continues to unfold as the debate rages on.
