LinkedIn CEO says AI is boosting the value of these 4 'soft skills'

The landscape of employment is shifting, and LinkedIn's CEO, Ryan Roslansky, believes that soft skills are poised for a significant transformation. In a recent discussion on the "Tools and Weapons" podcast, he highlighted that as AI takes over routine tasks, four key human skills—curiosity, courage, communication, and compassion—are becoming increasingly valuable. Roslansky emphasized the importance of these skills in enhancing job performance, stating, "These turn out to be some really, really important skills to do your job well." He envisions a future where the integration of human capabilities and AI fosters a more optimistic outlook on work, enabling professionals to dream bigger about the potential of technology in the workplace. While Roslansky's perspective draws from extensive LinkedIn data, he refrained from sharing specific statistics during the interview. His optimistic approach stands in contrast to other opinions within Silicon Valley, where some experts predict significant changes to job roles due to AI advancements. Notable figures like OpenAI investor Vinod Khosla speculate that today's young children may never need traditional jobs, while others foresee the title of 'software engineer' becoming obsolete. Instead of a drastic overhaul, Roslansky argues that AI is reshaping how individuals perceive their jobs, encouraging them to think of their roles as a series of tasks. He categorizes these tasks into three segments: those that AI can completely automate, those that AI can enhance, and those that fundamentally require human interaction, such as conflict resolution and team persuasion. In a world where AI assumes more automated functions, Roslansky believes this will lead to increased opportunities for meaningful interactions among coworkers. He suggests that as AI streamlines workflows, skills like communication, judgment, and emotional intelligence will gain prominence. Although he maintains a hopeful outlook on the future of AI, he acknowledges the uncertainty that comes with technological advancements. "Sometimes when you're mired in the technology, especially with AI, it leads you to some dark places," he noted. Nonetheless, he asserts the pivotal role of humans in guiding the direction of technology's evolution.
