LinkedIn conducts fresh layoffs, slashes hundreds of engineering and marketing roles

LinkedIn, the professional networking giant owned by Microsoft, has revealed plans to reduce its workforce by 5% through a recent internal memo. This decision has led to hundreds of employees in California receiving notifications about their impending layoffs, which are part of a larger restructuring strategy. Reports indicate that over 600 individuals have been informed that their jobs will be eliminated, with the layoffs scheduled to commence on July 13. The majority of these job losses will occur in California, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the company's headquarters is located. Most significantly affected will be LinkedIn's Mountain View office, which is set to see 352 employees laid off, alongside an additional 66 remote workers associated with that location. Other affected sites include San Francisco, with around 108 job losses; Sunnyvale, which will lose approximately 59 positions; and Carpinteria, facing around 21 cuts. While these layoffs are primarily concentrated in California, the ramifications are expected to reach a global scale as the company embarks on its comprehensive restructuring. Previous estimates suggested that up to 900 roles across various teams might be impacted, encompassing departments such as engineering, product development, and marketing. In an internal communication, CEO Daniel Shapero noted that layoffs would also extend to regions including Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific (APAC). This move aligns with the company's evolving priorities as it seeks to adopt a more agile operational model. LinkedIn plans to scale back expenditures across several areas, such as marketing campaigns and office space, to concentrate on projects delivering greater returns on investment. The tech industry has seen a wave of layoffs, with other major companies like Meta and Oracle also announcing significant job cuts recently.
