LG Uplus, a leading telecom provider in South Korea, has alerted the national cybersecurity authority, KISA, about a possible data breach. However, the company has not disclosed when the findings of its ongoing investigation will be made public. This incident marks the third significant cybersecurity issue among South Korea's major telecom operators, following similar reports from SK Telecom and KT Telecom over the past six months. The Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea confirmed that their investigation into KT and LG Uplus, which began last month, is still in progress. There are indications suggesting that these companies might have experienced cyberattacks akin to the recent incident involving SK Telecom. In July, KISA had detected potential signs of a hack and requested LG Uplus to submit a formal report. Initially, in August, LG’s telecom division refuted any claims of a breach, even as KT disclosed that user data had been compromised due to unauthorized micro base stations being connected to its network. KISA has chosen not to comment on the unfolding situation. This development follows allegations made by the hacking magazine Phrack, which claimed that intruders from China or North Korea had accessed data from nearly 9,000 LG Uplus servers. The current report from LG Uplus emerges amid a troubling trend of high-profile cyberattacks impacting telecoms, credit card firms, tech startups, and government bodies in South Korea, underscoring a range of vulnerabilities that have been previously highlighted. The country's fragmented cybersecurity infrastructure, coupled with a shortage of specialists, has significantly hampered its ability to effectively combat these escalating cyber threats.
