I watched LG’s new home robot CLOid do laundry but I have questions

At this year's CES, electronics powerhouse LG introduced CLOid, a cutting-edge home robot that the company believes will transform domestic chores, potentially eliminating the need for human intervention altogether. This AI-driven assistant is designed to take on various household tasks, from folding laundry to preparing breakfast and monitoring the home for safety concerns. LG envisions CLOid evolving into an 'ambient-care agent' that seamlessly integrates into daily life. The announcement was made during LG's keynote presentation, and attendees had the opportunity to observe CLOid in action through demonstrations on the exhibition floor. Presenting alongside a human representative, CLOid showcased its capabilities, performing tasks for an engaged audience. The robot features autonomous navigation and is equipped with an array of cameras and sensors. When connected to LG’s ThinQ smart home app, CLOid can analyze situational and environmental data to provide helpful suggestions to enhance the user's lifestyle. CLOid operates using a sophisticated vision language model that translates images and videos into structured, language-based comprehension, paired with a voice command recognition system that executes tasks in response to verbal instructions. While several domestic robots like Amazon’s Astro and Enabot’s EBO X have emerged in recent years, CLOid aims to address a wider range of household activities, boasting a substantial upper body and dual arms designed for lifting and interaction. However, during the demonstration, CLOid's performance raised some eyebrows. The robot cautiously retrieved a shirt from a basket and placed it into a dryer, and later gingerly set a croissant into an oven. Although the presentation included well-produced videos showcasing CLOid in various ideal scenarios, the live demonstration highlighted its slow pace. When instructed to make breakfast, CLOid took its time navigating to the refrigerator, pausing for an extended moment before selecting milk. Observers noted that even the slowest human could likely outpace CLOid. The concept behind CLOid aligns with LG's vision of a 'Zero Labor Home,' where automation can handle mundane domestic duties, allowing users to focus on other tasks. While the intention is clear, the timeline for CLOid's public release remains uncertain. A disclaimer during the presentation indicated that the product is still under development and not yet available for commercial use. An LG representative confirmed that while CLOid will be launched in the future, a specific timeline is not yet established. Overall, CLOid appears to be more of a showcase for LG’s ambitious vision than a ready-to-market product. The robot is strategically positioned to promote LG's expanding AI home ecosystem, which includes a variety of innovative smart home devices. Among these offerings are an AI-powered oven that can identify ingredients and suggest recipes, as well as a conversational AI refrigerator. All these devices are designed to work in harmony with CLOid and can be controlled through the ThinQ app.
