Lego announces NASA Artemis SLS rocket set to lift off (literally) in 2026

Lego is set to launch an exciting new addition to its Technic series: a detailed model of NASA's Artemis Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. This innovative set is designed to not only showcase the rocket's impressive features but also allow builders to replicate its launch sequence right from their own homes. Scheduled for release on January 1, 2026, the set will be priced at $59.99 and includes 632 pieces. Enthusiasts can recreate the powerful ascent of the rocket, complete with the separation of its expendable stages. The highlight of this set is the ability to simulate the launch of the Orion crew spacecraft and its European Service Module, offering a hands-on experience that sparks creativity and learning. According to the product description on Lego’s website, this educational set captures the rocket launch in three significant stages. Users can turn a crank to witness the solid rocket boosters detach from the core stage, followed by the separation of the upper stage, which includes the Orion spacecraft and the launch abort system. This model effectively mirrors the first eight and a half minutes of an Artemis mission, although it omits the jettison of the abort system tower that occurs prior to the real rocket's separation. To ensure authenticity, Lego collaborated closely with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) during the development process. Olaf Kegger, the designer behind the set, emphasized the realistic sound effects that accompany the ascent, stating, "You can hear it — it is really noisy, the rocket." However, he noted that there are no sound effects when the motion is reversed, as the actual SLS rocket does not descend in this manner. With its engaging design and educational value, this Lego set promises to be a thrilling experience for both young builders and space enthusiasts alike.
