Swedish legaltech Legora hits $5 billion valuation as investors pile money into European AI startups

Swedish legal technology firm Legora has successfully raised $550 million in a Series D funding round, bringing its total valuation to an impressive $5.55 billion. This round, announced on Tuesday, was spearheaded by Accel and saw contributions from notable existing investors such as Benchmark, Bessemer Venture Partners, General Catalyst, ICONIQ, Redpoint Ventures, and Y Combinator. In addition to its long-time backers, a host of new investors joined the funding effort, including Alkeon Capital, Bain Capital, Firstmark Capital, Menlo Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, Sands Capital, and Starwood Capital. This latest funding marks Legora's third capital raise within the past year. The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for European AI companies, which have witnessed a substantial influx of investment recently. For instance, U.K.-based AI infrastructure company Nscale disclosed a remarkable $2 billion in Series C funding on Monday, while Yann LeCun's new venture, Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs, announced over $1 billion in backing just a day later. Earlier this year, autonomous driving startup Wayve achieved an $8.6 billion valuation following a $1.2 billion Series D raise. According to Dealroom, European AI startups saw record investment levels in 2025, totaling $21.7 billion. In the early months of 2026 alone, AI companies in the region have already amassed more than $9 billion in funding. Max Junestrand, CEO and co-founder of Legora, commented on the current landscape, stating, "The pace of adoption in the U.S. has exceeded our expectations, as leading firms and in-house teams move decisively from experimentation to embedding AI across their organisations." He added that this funding will facilitate accelerated growth in the U.S. market, allowing Legora to invest in talent and infrastructure while strengthening its presence in key regions to better support customers integrating AI into their operations. Legora is set to broaden its reach in the U.S. with new offices opening in Houston and Chicago, complementing its existing locations in New York and Denver. By the close of 2026, the company anticipates expanding its workforce to over 300 employees across these offices.
