Legora is buying another startup as the battle for Big Law's business heats up

Legora, a Swedish startup specializing in software for legal professionals, has made a significant move by acquiring Stockholm-based Qura. This strategic purchase comes as Legora aims to enhance its competitive edge against rival Harvey in the burgeoning legal technology sector. The details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. Founded in 2023, Legora provides a suite of AI-driven tools that streamline legal drafting and document analysis, enabling law firms to minimize tedious tasks and focus more on client service. The company recently achieved a valuation of $5.5 billion, while its competitor, Harvey, sits at $11 billion. Both companies have attracted substantial funding from leading venture capitalists, intensifying the race to dominate the legal tech space. Max Junestrand, Legora's co-founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of addressing one of the most challenging aspects of legal work—accurate legal research. He pointed out that a lawyer's worst fear is submitting a legal brief that cites a fictitious case generated by AI. Unlike traditional methods, large language models typically predict word sequences rather than verify factual accuracy. To mitigate the risk of erroneous citations, it is crucial to connect these models to verified legal resources. However, accessing legal data presents difficulties. While much of the law is publicly accessible, practical access is often restricted. For instance, federal courts charge fees for filings, and many older state court decisions remain offline, complicating efforts to compile comprehensive datasets. In contrast, Legora's competitors have been proactive in securing legal data partnerships. Harvey recently teamed up with LexisNexis to integrate its extensive legal data into its platform, and Luminance announced a similar collaboration. Clio, another player in the legal software arena, opted for a different strategy by acquiring vLex, a legal research provider, for $1 billion last year. Legora's approach has involved connecting to a variety of global legal sources, from France's highest court to Australian antitrust tribunals, as well as the SEC's Edgar database. Junestrand noted that the acquisition of Qura was less about adding sources and more focused on enhancing the technology behind legal data management. Qura's innovative search engine is designed to sift through legal documents, extract pertinent information, and generate concise summaries or comprehensive analyses. He likened Legora's mission to building a car, while Qura creates the necessary road infrastructure. Without a structured system, navigating legal complexities becomes a guessing game. Qura has demonstrated robust growth, with a 40% monthly revenue increase over the last six months since its pre-seed funding of $2 million earlier this year. Meanwhile, Legora recently reported reaching $100 million in annual recurring revenue, a figure that has sparked some debate regarding its calculation. For Legora, mastering legal research is paramount. In many industries, inaccuracies may be inconvenient, but in law, they can lead to serious consequences, including sanctions or damage to a lawyer's reputation. This risk was highlighted when the prestigious law firm Sullivan & Cromwell recently apologized to a federal judge for submitting a document containing fabricated citations and quotes generated by AI, revealing the potential pitfalls of unreliable legal tech solutions. As competition in the legal tech landscape intensifies, the firm that emerges victorious may ultimately be the one that clients trust to uphold their credibility in court.
