LEGO SMART Bricks introduce a new way to build — and they don’t require screens

At CES on Monday, LEGO introduced its groundbreaking Smart Play system, merging traditional play with interactive technology. This new initiative features a 2×4 Smart Brick, Smart Tag tiles, and Smart Minifigures, which together create a dynamic building experience. The Smart Bricks and Minifigures are designed to respond to nearby Smart Tags—2×2 studless tiles equipped with distinctive digital identifiers. For instance, when paired with a Smart Tag designed for a helicopter, the Smart Brick can illuminate and emit propeller sounds, enhancing the play experience. Equipped with an accelerometer, the Brick adjusts its responses based on how it’s being used, providing realistic feedback as children simulate flying their creations. Powered by a compact ASIC chip that is smaller than a single LEGO stud, these Smart Bricks utilize near-field magnetic positioning to detect their surroundings. The integrated speaker, accelerometer, and LED array work together to bring the bricks to life. To facilitate communication between multiple Smart Bricks, LEGO has developed a Bluetooth-based protocol called BrickNet, which boasts enhanced encryption and privacy features. One of the standout aspects of the Smart Play system is the absence of screens, making it accessible for children and reassuring for parents. However, LEGO's website humorously mentions a Smart Tag designed to animate LEGO toilets, hinting at the quirky possibilities ahead. The first two sets utilizing this innovative system, both inspired by Star Wars, are set to launch on March 1, with preorders starting this Friday. The “Luke’s Red Five X-wing” will retail for $69.99, while the more extensive “Throne Room Duel and A-wing” set will be priced at $159.99. These sets will allow iconic characters like Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia to interact with Smart Tags, enabling exciting features such as Lightsaber duels, which are sure to thrill fans of the franchise.
