Nintendo and Lego bring back 1989's Game Boy with lenticular display: Details

Lego has officially introduced its latest creation: a brick-built homage to the iconic Nintendo Game Boy from 1989. Preorders for this nostalgic set are now available, with a launch date set for October 1st. Retailing at $60 in the U.S., the model closely resembles the original handheld console, standing at approximately 9cm tall and 14cm wide. This announcement comes after Lego's earlier commitment in January to undertake the ambitious task of recreating the classic gaming device. The design captures the essence of the original Game Boy, showcasing its signature rounded edges and distinctive button layout. Notably, the A and B buttons are crafted from custom Lego pieces that give the illusion of being pressed into the console's frame, enhancing the authenticity of the build. In a departure from standard practices, the set employs printed tiles instead of stickers for detailing, featuring recognizable labels such as "Dot Matrix With Stereo Sound," the speaker grille, battery compartment, and power switch. Additionally, a serial number is cleverly placed on the back, which is said to include a fun easter egg for fans. A standout feature of this set is its lenticular screens that mimic gameplay. Users can insert brick-built cartridges representing beloved Game Boy classics like Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. By tilting the display, animated scenes from these games come to life, including the iconic Nintendo logo animation that greets players at startup. The cartridge for Link's Awakening also comes with a second lenticular screen showcasing a memorable scene featuring Link and Marin. While Tetris, the original pack-in title for the Game Boy, is not part of this set, Lego has promoted the launch by recreating a portion of the original U.S. commercial for the console, which has been shared on their Instagram account. This official release follows numerous fan-made tributes to the Game Boy in Lego form, including a popular design by artist Nick Lever. Although the Lego Game Boy is a non-functional model, it has already captured the attention of collectors and enthusiasts, drawn in by its display-worthy features and nostalgic charm.
