Taiwanese law enforcement has taken significant action against Pete Lau, the co-founder and CEO of OnePlus, by issuing an arrest warrant. This decision stems from alleged breaches of regulations concerning the recruitment of local tech talent by companies based in mainland China, as reported by Bloomberg. The prosecutors in Taipei’s Shilin district have indicted Lau along with two Taiwanese individuals who are accused of facilitating these illegal recruitment efforts. It is alleged that they unlawfully recruited over 70 Taiwanese engineers to work for OnePlus and its affiliated brand, Oppo, in China. Lau currently holds dual roles as CEO of OnePlus and chief product officer at Oppo. The investigation focuses on recruitment activities that reportedly date back to 2014. According to Taiwan’s Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area, Chinese companies cannot hire Taiwanese professionals without prior government authorization. This law aims to safeguard Taiwan's semiconductor and electronics industries—critical pillars of the island's economy—from the depletion of intellectual property and skilled labor due to competition from the mainland. This case is part of a wider initiative by Taiwanese authorities to combat what they characterize as the systematic poaching of high-tech talent by Chinese firms. Previous arrests have also targeted executives from other manufacturers, including those associated with Apple supplier Luxshare Precision Industry Co. While the Taiwanese government has not yet provided any comments regarding potential extradition procedures, OnePlus has stated that its business activities continue unaffected.
