Meta halted internal research suggesting social media harm, court filing alleges

Recent court documents reveal that Meta allegedly discontinued internal research suggesting that individuals who ceased using Facebook experienced reduced levels of depression and anxiety. The legal filing, made public on Friday, indicates that this study, referred to as Project Mercury, was initiated in late 2019 to investigate the effects of Meta's platforms on polarization, news consumption, well-being, and social interactions. This complaint, submitted to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, includes unredacted details about Meta's internal practices. It is part of a larger multidistrict litigation involving various plaintiffs, including school districts, parents, and state attorneys general, who are taking action against multiple social media companies, such as Meta, YouTube, Snap, and TikTok. These plaintiffs argue that the companies knew about the mental health risks their platforms posed to children and young adults but failed to act, misleading educators and authorities. In response to the allegations, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone articulated strong disagreement, claiming the accusations are based on selective information that misrepresents their actions. He emphasized that for over a decade, the company has engaged with parents and made significant changes to enhance teen safety online, including the introduction of Teen Accounts equipped with protective features. The 2019 research evaluated a random group of users who stopped using Facebook and Instagram for a month. According to the lawsuit, initial findings indicated that those who paused their Facebook usage for just a week reported lower feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and social comparison. Allegations suggest that Meta opted not to disseminate these findings, instead choosing to end the research before it could be made public. The lawsuit highlights a statement from an unnamed Meta employee who compared the situation to tobacco companies that concealed the harmful effects of smoking. Stone, however, countered these implications, arguing that the 2019 study was flawed and did not establish a definitive link between Meta’s platforms and negative mental health outcomes. He noted that the research simply indicated that individuals who perceived their Facebook usage negatively felt better when they stopped using it, aligning with existing studies on similar themes. In a series of posts, Stone reiterated that the findings were consistent with other public research and did not provide evidence of the overall impact of using Facebook. The unfolding legal situation continues to draw attention to the ongoing debate surrounding social media's effects on mental health.
