Anthropic’s India expansion collides with a local company that already had the name

Anthropic's recent move to establish a presence in India has ignited a legal dispute with a local software firm that claims prior rights to the name "Anthropic." This situation highlights the potential conflicts that can arise when international AI companies expand into markets already occupied by local enterprises. The Indian company, known as Anthropic Software, has filed a complaint in a Karnataka commercial court, asserting that it has been using the name since 2017. The complaint indicates that Anthropic's entry into India has caused confusion among customers, leading the software firm to seek legal recognition of its established name and compensation amounting to ₹10 million (approximately $110,000). Founder and director of Anthropic Software, Mohammadayyaz A. Mulla, expressed that the intent is not to engage in a confrontation but rather to clarify and affirm their existing rights in the market. He emphasized that if a peaceful resolution cannot be reached, legal action will be considered a necessary recourse. "As of now, I am exercising my legal right as it’s causing huge confusion to my customers," he stated. India's growing significance in the global AI landscape is underscored by its status as the most populous country and a rapidly expanding internet market. The country is set to host an AI Impact Summit in New Delhi next week, with notable figures such as Anthropic’s co-founder Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang in attendance. On January 20, a court order confirmed that the case had been acknowledged, with notice and suit summons issued to Anthropic. However, the court declined to grant an interim injunction and scheduled the next hearing for February 16. Anthropic has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the situation.
