An AI startup is suing the US government for taking away Anthropic's new model

In a significant legal move, the AI startup Legion has initiated a lawsuit against the U.S. government, contesting restrictions that limit access to Anthropic's advanced models. The legal tech company, based in San Jose, filed its complaint in Washington, D.C., following a directive from the government that mandated Anthropic to restrict its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models from foreign nationals. Earlier this month, Anthropic announced it would disable access to these models after receiving a letter from the U.S. government instructing it to prevent foreign individuals and entities from utilizing their technologies. This decision has significant implications, as it temporarily barred some of Anthropic's own employees from using these tools. To comply with the new regulations, Anthropic initially suspended access for all users but later re-enabled access to Fable 5 with stricter nationality-based controls and enhanced onboarding screenings. In its lawsuit, Legion emphasized that it is a U.S.-based company employing Canadian nationals who work remotely. The company argues that its litigation technology solutions, which rely heavily on Anthropic’s models, have been adversely affected by the government's order. Their filing states, "Legion is a commercial customer of Anthropic with a contractual right and license to access and use the Fable 5 model, which was integral to building and operating its platform." The sudden loss of access to this critical tool has reportedly inflicted "immediate, irreparable, and existential" harm on Legion, particularly in a rapidly evolving AI landscape. Founded in 2024, Legion specializes in AI-driven litigation drafting software, designed to assist attorneys in automating legal documents such as pleadings and discovery requests. The lawsuit underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding AI governance and the control of advanced models, adding another layer to the existing conflict between Anthropic and the U.S. government. The Department of Commerce has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the lawsuit, which may signal the beginning of a series of legal challenges from other Anthropic users affected by similar restrictions.
