As VC-backed e-bike startups went bankrupt, bootstrapped Lectric grew

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Lectric eBikes is challenging the prevailing trend in the electric bike industry by launching three new brands this year. These include a relaunch of Juiced Bikes, the introduction of Juiced Powersports, and a premium adventure brand named Monarc. This expansion comes despite a wave of bankruptcies ravaging the e-bike sector, with Lectric investing approximately $10 million into these initiatives, according to CEO Levi Conlow. While many companies are scaling back or seeking new funding, Lectric is taking a bold step forward. Conlow emphasized, "I actually don’t think the market is saturated right now; last month we recorded our highest sales ever, moving nearly 30,000 bikes in a single month, which is unprecedented even compared to the peak during COVID." The timing of these launches may seem counterintuitive, given the recent bankruptcies of several e-bike companies, including the high-profile Rad Power Bikes, which collapsed after raising nearly $330 million in venture capital. Rad Power, once valued at $1.65 billion, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December, with its assets acquired by Life Electric Vehicles Holdings for $13.2 million. Conlow views this turmoil as an opportunity, claiming that the market currently lacks significant competition. Lectric’s growth story is particularly compelling as it was built without the backing of venture capital. Conlow and co-founder Robby Deziel, childhood friends, started the company seven years ago and later secured investment from Bertram Capital Management in 2020. Now, Lectric stands as one of the top direct-to-consumer e-bike companies in the U.S., with a projected shipment of 150,000 units by 2025. Conlow shared insights on maintaining brand integrity, stating, "What we’ve learned is that Lectric cannot be everything to everyone." The company has a diverse lineup, including folding bikes and electric tricycles, but aims to keep its brands distinct to avoid confusion among customers. To ensure clarity, each brand—Juiced Bikes, Juiced Powersports, and Monarc—operates with its own dedicated teams for product development, branding, and customer service. Monarc is particularly focused on the premium adventure lifestyle market, offering features like a five-year warranty and personalized customer support without the use of AI. Monarc's initial offering, the Marker, is an all-terrain electric bike equipped with dual LG 48-volt 15Ah batteries and advanced features such as a Bafang motor and a color touchscreen interface. Though small in size, with only ten and eight employees at Monarc and Juiced Bikes respectively, both brands are expected to grow, leveraging Lectric’s established supply chain and resources. While the future of new brand launches remains uncertain, Conlow is open to possibilities but emphasizes the need for focus on current initiatives. "We have made our plate very full, and we’re going to stay focused on this," he concluded.
