Hyundai's electric air taxi venture, Supernal, is experiencing significant leadership changes shortly after halting its vehicle development program. Sources confirm that the company's chief strategy officer, Jaeyong Song, and chief safety officer, Tracy Lamb, have both departed from their roles. Additionally, Lina Yang, who was the chief of staff to the recently departed CEO Jaiwon Shin, is also no longer with the organization. In a statement to TechCrunch, Supernal indicated that these changes are part of a broader strategic review intended to align the program with long-term objectives. The company reassured stakeholders that Hyundai Motor Group remains firmly committed to advancing its business in the realm of advanced air mobility (AAM). Jaeyong Song's exit is particularly noteworthy, as he previously served as vice president of Hyundai's AAM group for three years before stepping into the chief strategy officer position at Supernal in 2023, following the startup's separation from Hyundai's AAM in 2021. Meanwhile, Tracy Lamb brought extensive experience from her background as a commercial pilot and aerospace safety executive. The year has proven challenging for Supernal, which faced setbacks including the abrupt closure of its new headquarters in Washington, D.C., by the end of 2024. While the company successfully conducted its inaugural test flight in March, it also had to make significant layoffs shortly thereafter. By September, the decision to pause the air taxi program and initiate an executive reshuffle highlighted the pressures facing the company in a rapidly evolving industry. This moment is pivotal for the emerging electric vertical takeoff and landing sector, where some companies are securing investments and forming partnerships in anticipation of commercial launches, while others are struggling to survive.
