Grok-maker xAI loses another co-founder

In a surprising turn of events, Tony Wu, a co-founder of xAI, announced his resignation late Monday night. This marks yet another significant departure within the company's leadership team, which has faced a series of high-profile exits in recent months. In his social media farewell, Wu shared his positive experiences at xAI but indicated it was time for him to pursue new opportunities. He noted the transformative power of small teams utilizing artificial intelligence, hinting at possible motivations behind his decision to leave. As of March 2025, xAI had approximately 1,200 employees, a mix of AI engineers and staff focused on the X social network. Among these, around 900 were designated as "AI tutors," although reports indicate that about 500 of those positions were eliminated in September. Wu's resignation follows the exit of fellow co-founder Igor Babuschkin, who left in August to establish a venture capital firm centered on AI safety. Additionally, co-founders Kyle Kosic and Christian Szegedy have also departed since the company's inception in 2023. Last month, Greg Yang stepped back from his role due to ongoing health issues related to chronic Lyme disease.
