In a significant transition for NASA, Makenzie Lystrup, the director of the Goddard Space Flight Center, is set to depart her role effective August 1. Her exit comes as the agency faces a potential 25% budget reduction under the Trump administration. Lystrup has led Goddard since April 2023, managing a workforce of over 8,000 civil servants and contractors, alongside an annual budget of approximately $4.7 billion. This positions Goddard as NASA's largest field center dedicated to scientific research and robotic space mission development, rivaling the agency's human spaceflight centers in Texas, Florida, and Alabama. During her tenure, Lystrup oversaw critical projects, including the management of the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes. Additionally, her team is in the process of assembling the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a flagship observatory scheduled for launch in the upcoming year. NASA's acting associate administrator, Vanessa Wyche, expressed gratitude for Lystrup's contributions, highlighting her role in fostering a new era of exploration and innovation at Goddard. Cynthia Simmons, previously the deputy director, will step into the acting chief role, bringing her 25 years of experience at the center to the position. Lystrup's journey to NASA began with her management role at Ball Aerospace, which is now part of BAE Systems, where she oversaw civilian space projects. Her academic background includes a doctorate in astrophysics from University College London and research experience as a planetary astronomer. The news of Lystrup's departure coincided with the release of an open letter addressed to NASA's interim administrator, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. This letter, known as the 'Voyager Declaration,' was signed by hundreds of current and former NASA employees, raising concerns about recent policies that they argue could jeopardize public resources, human safety, and national security, while undermining the agency's core mission.
