In a significant leadership transition, MongoDB has announced that Dev Ittycheria will step down as CEO after an impressive 11-year tenure. Effective November 10, he will be succeeded by Chirantan 'CJ' Desai, who recently served as Cloudflare's president of product and engineering. Ittycheria, who will remain on MongoDB's board, shared insights about his decision during an interview with CNBC. He revealed that earlier this year, the board engaged him in discussions about his long-term plans and whether he could commit to another five years in the top role. After careful consideration and discussions with his family and the board, Ittycheria concluded that he could not make that commitment. Before leading MongoDB, Ittycheria was the president of BMC, which acquired his company BladeLogic for $854 million in 2008. As a co-founder of BladeLogic, he had previously taken the company public in 2007. Under his leadership, MongoDB initiated its IPO in 2017, three years after he took charge. The company made significant strides in appealing to software developers by offering a versatile database architecture that competes with established players like Oracle. During Ittycheria's tenure, MongoDB focused on cloud subscriptions, secured multi-year contracts, collaborated with major cloud providers such as Amazon and Microsoft, and expanded its software’s capabilities in generative artificial intelligence. The company reported a stock price of $359.82 at the close of trading last Friday, reflecting a remarkable fifteenfold increase since its IPO, bringing its market capitalization close to $30 billion. In the most recent quarter, MongoDB's net loss decreased to $47 million from $54.5 million the previous year, while revenue climbed by 24% to reach $591 million. Meanwhile, Desai is set to leave Cloudflare on November 7 to take on his new role at MongoDB. He has a wealth of experience, previously serving as the operating chief at ServiceNow and holding key positions at EMC and Symantec. Ittycheria expressed confidence in Desai's capabilities, citing conversations with individuals familiar with Desai's work. Desai, who began his career at Oracle, plans to split his time between New York and the San Francisco area. He anticipates that MongoDB will exceed its guidance for revenue and adjusted earnings per share for the upcoming fiscal third quarter. Desai expressed his ambitious vision for MongoDB, aiming to drive the company towards over $5 billion in revenue while establishing it as the leading standard in modern database technology across various workloads. A timeline for this goal has yet to be specified. The leadership change will be discussed in detail during a conference call with analysts scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
