As RFK Jr.’s anti-vaccine ways turn toxic to GOP, CDC director is hard to find

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is facing a significant leadership vacuum, having been without a permanent director since August. This situation has worsened following the Trump administration's failure to meet a federal deadline to appoint a successor on Wednesday. Federal regulations stipulate that a Senate-confirmed position cannot remain vacant for over 210 days when filled by an acting official. The countdown began when Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his controversial stance against vaccines, dismissed Susan Monarez from her role as CDC director. This occurred after Monarez reportedly refused to approve changes to CDC vaccine guidelines. Until recently, Jay Bhattacharya, the head of the National Institutes of Health, was serving as the acting director, but he can no longer officially hold that title. This leadership gap comes at a critical time as the Trump administration seeks to manage Kennedy’s aggressive anti-vaccine stance, which has proven to be unpopular and potentially damaging for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections. Since assuming his role, Kennedy has implemented several policies that challenge vaccination efforts, including retracting COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, cutting funding for mRNA vaccine research, and significantly altering the CDC’s childhood vaccine schedule. Moreover, Kennedy has dismissed numerous expert vaccine advisors, replacing them with allies who have further diluted vaccine recommendations, even for essential immunizations like the hepatitis B birth dose. Amidst this backdrop, the U.S. is experiencing a resurgence in measles outbreaks, the worst seen since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. The federal response has been criticized for its lack of urgency, and Kennedy has propagated questionable information regarding measles vaccination while advocating unverified treatment methods.
