CEO of SpaceX rival United Launch Alliance resigns

Tory Bruno has stepped down as CEO of United Launch Alliance (ULA) after 12 years, as announced by the company. In a statement, ULA chairs Robert Lightfoot and Kay Sears expressed gratitude for Bruno's leadership and contributions to the organization and the nation. Bruno's resignation occurs amid a rapidly evolving landscape in the private spaceflight sector, where companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are significantly influencing the launch market. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has notably increased its launch frequency, while Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is emerging as a more competitive force following successful initial flights of its New Glenn rocket. Founded two decades ago through the merger of Boeing and Lockheed Martin's space launch operations, ULA has been a key supplier for NASA and the Department of Defense. However, it has faced increasing challenges from SpaceX, which has begun to secure a significant number of contracts. During his tenure, one of Bruno's most significant achievements was overseeing the development of the Vulcan rocket. This next-generation vehicle aimed to help ULA remain competitive with SpaceX and reduce the U.S. government's dependency on Russian rockets for space access. The Vulcan project, which utilized components from earlier ULA rockets such as Atlas and Delta, encountered various delays before its inaugural launch, which is set for 2024—ten years after its development began. As ULA navigates this transition, it has already secured customers like Amazon for its Leo satellite internet initiative and the startup Astrobotic. The company is also exploring options to enhance the reusability of its rockets and potentially develop upgraded versions to handle heavier payloads. In a message on social media platform X, Bruno expressed his pride in leading ULA through its transformative phase and bringing the Vulcan rocket closer to operational status. He indicated that his time at ULA had come to a close and pledged to support the company moving forward. In the interim, ULA's Chief Operating Officer, John Elbon, will take on the role of acting CEO while the search for a permanent successor begins.
