NASA Marshall Space Flight Center director Joseph Pelfrey resigns

Joseph Pelfrey, the director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, has officially announced his resignation, as confirmed by CNBC. In a message sent to his colleagues, Pelfrey emphasized the importance of having a leadership team aligned with NASA's ambitious plans to return humans to the moon. He expressed his intention to collaborate with NASA executives to explore new avenues for advancing the agency's space initiatives. NASA has acknowledged Pelfrey's departure and is actively seeking a new permanent director for the Marshall Space Flight Center, a key facility for human spaceflight. According to a NASA webpage detailing his role, Pelfrey managed a significant workforce of approximately 7,000 personnel, including civil service and contractors, and oversaw an annual budget of around $5 billion. The unexpected resignation has taken many by surprise, particularly as Pelfrey was scheduled to hold an all-hands meeting with staff, which was ultimately canceled. Amid ongoing budgetary challenges, including reductions during the Trump administration, the space agency has experienced a notable dip in resources, leading to the departure of around 4,000 employees through a voluntary resignation program. Further cuts were implemented by the Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative previously associated with Elon Musk. As NASA navigates these transitions, the administration's upcoming budget proposal for 2026, which has yet to be ratified, includes allocations for the agency, indicating ongoing support for its endeavors in space exploration.
