The biggest race in the world? The 24 Hours of Le Mans is this weekend.

This weekend, motorsport enthusiasts will turn their attention to France for one of the sport's premier events: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This prestigious endurance race is part of the 'triple crown' of motorsport, joining the ranks of the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix, a feat only achieved by the legendary Graham Hill. The 94th edition of this iconic event will see 62 cars compete on a unique blend of permanent racetrack and public roads, which locals typically use for everyday activities. Inaugurated in 1923, the race has evolved into a crucial platform for automotive innovation, where manufacturers test advanced technologies that often transition into everyday vehicles. From pioneering disc brakes to modern hybrid systems, Le Mans has consistently pushed the boundaries of automotive engineering. This year, the competitors are divided into three classes, each featuring teams of three drivers who take turns behind the wheel. Among the participants are not only seasoned professionals but also a mix of amateurs, including tech entrepreneurs from the Silicon Valley scene. Notable entrants this year include the co-founder of GitHub and the creator of Ruby on Rails, both competing in the LMP2 class. Additionally, Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, is fielding an Aston Martin team in both the Hypercar category—with the striking Valkyrie—and in the LMGT3 class, where his son, Gray, will also be racing. As the countdown to the race begins, excitement builds for what promises to be a spectacular display of speed, strategy, and technological prowess.
