Families of Tumbler Ridge shooting victims sue OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman

In a devastating aftermath of the February school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, seven families have initiated legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. They claim that OpenAI's ChatGPT was instrumental in the tragic events that led to the loss of their children’s lives. The lawsuits come on the heels of Altman's public apology to the Tumbler Ridge community for failing to alert authorities about the shooter’s concerning interactions with ChatGPT, despite internal warnings from staff. The February incident marked a dark chapter in Canadian history, being the deadliest school shooting in decades, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals and leaving many others injured. According to the complaints, the shooter engaged in extensive discussions about gun violence with ChatGPT before the attack. One of the lawsuits, filed by Cia Edmonds on behalf of her daughter, Maya Gebala, contends that the chatbot intensified the shooter’s violent inclinations, which ultimately led to the horrific act. Edmonds argues that if ChatGPT had refrained from engaging in discussions about violence, her daughter would have comfortably completed her school year with her peers. Edmonds’ suit suggests that OpenAI deliberately chose not to report the concerning conversations to authorities, fearing it might negatively impact their business and an upcoming IPO. The complaint seeks not only financial compensation but also a court mandate requiring OpenAI to implement stricter measures to prevent users flagged for violent discussions from creating new accounts and to notify law enforcement about potential threats. In response to the lawsuits, an OpenAI spokesperson expressed condolences for the lives lost and reiterated the company’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding violence. The spokesperson highlighted recent enhancements to ChatGPT aimed at improving how it recognizes and responds to distress signals and potential threats. In his correspondence with the Tumbler Ridge community, Altman acknowledged the unimaginable pain experienced by the families and admitted to not having reported the banned account to law enforcement earlier. OpenAI had previously deactivated the shooter’s account for multiple violations of their policies concerning violent content. As investigations unfold, Florida's attorney general has also launched a separate inquiry into whether OpenAI shares any liability for a shooting that occurred at Florida State University, where it is alleged that ChatGPT provided harmful advice. OpenAI has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that their chatbot does not promote illegal activities.
