Amazon-owned Ring should pay Americans for scanning their faces, lawsuit says

A new legal action has been initiated against Amazon, alleging that its Ring security cameras have unlawfully recorded the faces of millions of Americans. The class action lawsuit was filed by Charles Sigwalt, who claims it aims to represent anyone in the United States whose facial recognition data may have been captured by Ring's Familiar Faces feature since its introduction late last year. The lawsuit is seeking damages that exceed $5 million, a threshold necessary to establish jurisdiction in U.S. district courts for civil cases. Sigwalt argues that the number of affected individuals far surpasses this amount, especially when considering the potential statutory damages owed to each class member and the overall loss of value linked to the misuse of biometric data. Ring's Familiar Faces feature is intended to identify visitors at a user's doorstep and send alerts to the camera owner. While Amazon asserts that this feature is not activated by default, users have the option to enable it. The system allows users to compile a personal directory of up to 50 familiar faces, ensuring they are notified when recognized individuals arrive. Living in Virginia, Sigwalt has filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, where Amazon is based. He proposes a nationwide class for all individuals whose faces have been scanned, as well as a specific subclass for Virginia residents. The lawsuit details how the Familiar Faces feature employs facial recognition technology to analyze the faces of visitors and passersby, creating a unique 'face print' through artificial intelligence that allows for repeated identification.
