Lava Blaze Dragon 5G first impressions: Turning up the heat under ₹10k

Lava aims to shake up the budget smartphone market with its latest release, the Blaze Dragon 5G, priced at just ₹9,999. This device aspires to provide impressive 5G capabilities, a high refresh rate display, and a streamlined software experience, features that are typically hard to come by in this price range. The Blaze Dragon 5G is the first smartphone in India to utilize the cutting-edge 4nm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor. Initial impressions reveal that this chipset delivers a surprisingly responsive experience. Apps launch quickly, and navigation is smooth, aided by up to 8GB of RAM, including virtual RAM, which facilitates seamless multitasking during preliminary usage. In terms of design, the device boasts a sizable 6.74-inch LCD screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Although the resolution is just HD+, the higher refresh rate enhances scrolling and animations. Adverse weather conditions in Delhi have prevented thorough outdoor testing of the phone's 600 nits brightness, but it is expected to perform well once conditions improve. The device's design is eye-catching, especially the "Golden Mist" variant, which features a vibrant rainbow effect around the camera modules. While the back is made of plastic, it offers a premium feel in hand. Photography enthusiasts will find a 50MP main rear camera complemented by a secondary sensor, though the latter has limited functionality. An 8MP front-facing camera rounds out the photographic capabilities. While advanced features like ultrawide shots are absent, these omissions are understandable given the price point. The smartphone is powered by a robust 5000mAh battery, and thanks to the energy-efficient Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chip, it promises a full day of use on a single charge. It supports 18W fast charging through USB-C, which, while not the fastest available, is appropriate for its class. One of the standout aspects of the Blaze Dragon is its software. It operates on Android 15 right out of the box with no pre-installed bloatware, a refreshing alternative to the advertisement-laden interfaces found on many competitors in this segment. Additionally, Lava commits to providing one Android update and two years of security patches. In summary, the Lava Blaze Dragon 5G offers exceptional value for its price. With a clean software environment, solid build quality, a 120Hz display, and a capable 5G chipset, it stands out in the sub-₹10K category. Although the camera quality and display resolution may not be top-tier, many users will likely overlook these limitations for the impressive features that the device brings to the table.
