Amazon Kuiper second satellite launch postponed by ULA due to rocket booster issue

United Launch Alliance (ULA) announced a delay in the launch of the second batch of Amazon's Project Kuiper internet satellites due to a technical issue with the rocket booster. Just 30 minutes before the scheduled launch, ULA revealed that they were scrapping the flight because of a problem related to an 'elevated purge temperature' within the booster engine of the Atlas V rocket. ULA's CEO, Tory Bruno, communicated the setback via his post on Bluesky, stating, 'Possible issue with a GN2 purge line that cannot be resolved inside the count. We will need to stand down for today. We'll sort it and be back.' The launch, initially planned for last Friday, was already rescheduled to Monday at 1:25 p.m. ET because of poor weather conditions. In April, Amazon successfully launched 27 Kuiper satellites into low Earth orbit, which is situated within 1,200 miles of Earth's surface. The upcoming launch aims to place an additional 27 satellites into orbit, increasing the total number to 54. Amazon has ambitious plans for its satellite internet project, competing in a rapidly expanding industry that aims to provide high-speed internet access from space. Currently, the market is led by SpaceX's Starlink, with other significant players including OneWeb and Viasat. Amazon's goal is to establish a constellation of over 3,000 satellites, and to comply with a Federal Communications Commission mandate, it must launch at least half of this constellation—1,618 satellites—by July 2026.
