As India ushered in 2026, the nation showcased its penchant for spontaneous shopping, particularly with New Year’s Eve festivities on the horizon. Swiggy Instamart unveiled fascinating insights into the shopping patterns across the country, revealing a blend of traditional and modern gifting trends. While food items remained a staple, some unexpected products caught the attention of shoppers everywhere. Among the standout items, grapes emerged as the most sought-after purchase, garnering a staggering 235,000 searches by 5 AM, and experiencing a remarkable 78-fold increase in demand by evening. This surge was largely attributed to a popular Spanish tradition of consuming twelve grapes at midnight for good luck. Cities beyond the metropolitan hubs, such as Lonavala, Karimnagar, and Patiala, turned to Instamart for their last-minute needs. One noteworthy customer made headlines by placing an order for over 200 items in a single day, which included an astonishing 108 packs of Kurkure. Additionally, a shopper from Patiala splurged on gold coins worth ₹6 lakh, while another buyer in Mumbai gifted gold valued at ₹1.45 lakh. In Bangalore, an individual made a significant purchase of two iPhones totaling ₹1.8 lakh. The data also brought to light some interesting trends, such as Tonic Water being one of the top beverages ordered nationwide. Regions like Pune and Kolkata showed a spike in demand for BBQ supplies, while traditional treats like cakes and pizza bases also saw increased orders as people prepared to celebrate. Adding a personal touch, Instamart recognized its loyal customers, highlighting one individual who claimed the title of “Instamart’s MVP customer” with an impressive 4,548 orders throughout 2025, including over 15 orders placed on New Year’s Eve alone.
